Leon Gee
Following formative musical training as a violinist, Leon studied conducting at the Birmingham Conservatoire under Jonathan Del Mar. Further studies ensued in the Czech Republic, at Dartington with Diego Masson, and with British Youth Opera under Peter Robinson.
As British Arts Council Young Conductor, Leon was appointed founder Music Director for the London Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (1991-94). Guest engagements have included the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Ballet, Shanghai Symphony, as well as many of this country’s leading amateur orchestras. He has served as Music Director for orchestras including the Northampton Symphony, British Police Symphony and the Oxford Symphony Orchestras.
Highly regarded as an orchestral trainer, Leon is much in demand with younger orchestras; recent work includes conductorship of Junior Guildhall Symphony, Oxford University Orchestra, Pro Corda, RWCMD Juniors and Scottish Schools Orchestra Trust, as well as a number of youth orchestras. Leon holds Honorary Membership at the Birmingham Conservatoire, where he has appeared as guest conductor since 1993.
Leon is currently Music Director for the Windsor & Maidenhead Symphony Orchestra, Ealing Youth Orchestra, Berkshire Youth Orchestra and the National Scouts & Guides Symphony Orchestra. During the 2010/11 season Leon will be making debuts with the Ernest Read Symphony Orchestra and the London College of Music.
